Breaking into cybersecurity in 2026: what actually moves the needle

The gap between how many people want a first security job and how many first security jobs exist has never been wider. Most advice about closing it is either a certification list or a reading list. Neither is wrong; both miss what hiring managers are actually filtering on.

1. Foundations, because interviews find the gaps immediately

Networking and operating systems are not prerequisites you clear before the interesting material. They are the interesting material. A candidate who can explain what happens between typing a URL and receiving a page — DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP, the proxy in the middle — can reason about half the alerts in a SOC. A candidate who has memorised attack names cannot.

2. Evidence you can show, not credentials you can list

  • A home lab with a SIEM ingesting real logs, and three detections you wrote and tested yourself.
  • A short write-up of an investigation — what you saw, what you thought, what it turned out to be, and what you would do differently.
  • A small script that solves a real annoyance, published where someone can read it.
  • A retrospective on something you got wrong. Hiring managers trust candidates who can describe a mistake accurately.

Two of these beat a third certification, because they answer the question a CV cannot: what is this person like to work with on a problem?

3. Choose a direction early, then broaden

Security is not one job. Defensive operations, offensive testing, cloud security, governance and risk, and product security are different careers with different daily work. Picking one for the first eighteen months makes your learning coherent and your CV legible. You can move later — most people do — but arriving as a generalist with no depth is the hardest position to hire from.

4. Treat the job search as its own skill

Read job descriptions for the same role at ten companies and the true requirements separate from the wishlist. Tailor the CV to the actual words in the posting. Prepare three stories about your own work, structured around what you did and why, and be able to tell them in two minutes. Apply to roles where you meet most of the requirements rather than all, because the people getting interviews are doing exactly that.

About certifications

Security+ still clears more HR filters per pound than anything else at entry level, and it structures your foundations while you study. Beyond that, buy certifications for the doors they open in your chosen direction, not for the count on your profile.

Interviewers can tell the difference between a lab you built and a lab you watched someone build. Build it, break it, and be able to explain the failure.
